Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon revealed a new curriculum would be introduced at the primary and secondary levels from 2028. Speaking at the same press conference that was held to provide information and preparations concerning the HSC and equivalent examinations that began Thursday (Jul. 2), the prime minister's education adviser, Mahdi Amin, highlighted the goals and objectives of the new curriculum. He said, "Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, we are changing our curriculum in such a way that alongside academic knowledge, culture and sports will be prioritised. We are aiming to incorporate co-curricular activities into education."
The adviser also emphasised making technical and vocational education mandatory within the education system. The education minister mentioned that due to time constraints, it was not possible to implement the new curriculum from 2027, but it will be implemented from 2028. He also mentioned that a committee has been formed for curriculum development.
At least 311 members of various banned organisations are currently fugitives. They are accused in cases related to extremist activities. In addition, on 5 August 2024, the day of the mass uprising, nine convicts serving sentences in extremist-related cases escaped from Kashimpur High Security Central Prison in Gazipur. Security agencies remain concerned about the whereabouts and activities of these absconding extremists.
The figures come from data updated through April by the Police's specialised Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU). According to the information, the fugitives include 185 members of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), 83 members of Ansar Al Islam, 16 members of Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B), 16 members of Neo-JMB, nine members of Allahar Dal, one member of Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, and one member of Imam Mahmuder Kafela. Separately, the ATU data show that 59 members of the banned organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir are also absconding in connection with various cases.
Remittance inflows reached a record high of $35.5 billion in fiscal year 2025-26 as Bangladeshis working abroad sent more money home, according to provisional central bank data. The inflow grew 17.30 percent year-on-year from $30.3 billion in FY25. The growth helped offset a widening trade gap and narrowed the current account deficit amid declining exports, said Bangladesh Bank. The rate of growth, however, slowed sharply from FY25, when remittances had jumped 27 percent, the fastest pace in five years.
The data is set to be revised later as 11 banks had not submitted information because of a bank holiday, although this will likely increase the intake rather than decrease. Bangladesh Bank attributes the FY26 boost to a market-oriented, competitive exchange rate, tighter oversight of informal transfer networks, and wider access to formal financial services. The rise in remittances tracks a surge in Bangladeshi workers going abroad for jobs. More than 50 lakh people have migrated for work since 2022.
The Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) expressed deep concern over the death of a Chhatra League activist in the custody of the Detective Branch in Faridpur and the recovery of three bodies from the Turag river in Dhaka over a span of three days. The rights body demanded a fair and impartial probe into the incidents to bring the culprits to book. In a press release issued on Saturday (Jun. 27) evening, police headquarters stated, "An attempt is being made to mislead the public by spreading false information on social media under the headline, 'Bodies of Seven Awami League and Chhatra League activists Floating in the Turag River'. In reality, no such incident has been reported."
In at least one case however, police denied one of the three bodies found had any political link, but factchecking website The Dissent found Md Sumon (17), did have links to AL, and had left home on June 22 to join a programme celebrating the founding anniversary of the party the next day.
