After 14 years, a lead finally emerged in the 2012 murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi, with three individuals allegedly involved in the killings identified, according to Tanvir Hasan Zoha, special prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal. Zoha disclosed that in the course of their investigative work on disgraced army officer Ziaul Ahsan, they interviewed an officer who was serving in RAB's intelligence wing at the time, directly under Ahsan's leadership.
According to Zoha, on the night before the murders, Ahsan said to this officer: "Something is about to happen. We need to be ready tomorrow morning." Investigators are examining whether members of the team went to the scene solely to investigate or also with the intention of destroying evidence, Zoha revealed. In November 2025, the case was transferred to the PBI. Their next court-determined deadline for submitting the investigation report in the case is September 30 - a deadline that has already been missed 129 times by various agencies.
The Cabinet approved the National Pay Scale 2026, raising the basic salary of government employees, introducing higher slab-based net pensions and new allowances including a disability allowance for children with special needs. Under the new pay scale, the basic salary for employees in the lowest grade will increase by 142 percent, while the salary fixed for the highest grade will rise by 100 percent.
Considering the likely inflationary effect of the new pay structure, the government has decided to phase in its full implementation through two fiscals - the current one (2026-27), and the next (2027-28). Revised basic salaries will be implemented in three phases between July 1, 2026 (backdated) and July 1, 2027, while allowances will come into effect simultaneously from January 1, 2028. The net pension increases will also be implemented in phases. Employees in Grades 10 to 20 will receive priority in implementation, considering their comparatively lower incomes.
The Anti-Corruption Commission is going to conduct an inquiry into allegations of corruption against Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, who served as youth and sports affairs adviser to the interim government that was in office for 18 months, as well as three serving senior officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The complaint alleged that orders were issued to cancel the current-charge arrangements of 38 upazila youth development officers (YDOs) and transfer them elsewhere in exchange for Tk 76 lakh.
It also alleged that Tk 1.5 crore was collected from around 150 assistant upazila YDOs in connection with their promotions, while another Tk 2 crore was paid to arrange plum postings. Mahmud has already denied the charges, saying the cancellation of the 38 officers was made following a court order. The assistant YDOs, he said, were promoted in accordance with the rules and recommendations of the Public Service Commission. He also demanded an apology within 24 hours from the ACC.
The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission approved the introduction of derivatives trading on the Dhaka Stock Exchange, aiming to launch the country's first derivatives market by January 2028. It marks a major step towards adding a new asset class to the country's capital market, with index futures expected to be the first financial derivatives product on the prime bourse. It also sends a welcome signal on the deregulatory intentions of the BNP government, and new BSEC Chairman Masud Khan.
The approved roadmap lays out the regulatory and technological preparations that the DSE must complete before trading in derivatives begins. Under the plan, the DSE will develop the necessary trading systems and infrastructure, while a mechanism will also have to be in place for clearing and settlement, margin, collateral management and comprehensive risk controls. The BSEC, as the securities regulator, will regularly monitor the implementation of the DSE's work plan to ensure that the required infrastructure and risk-management mechanisms are properly developed before actual trading begins.
