Reportage
Five Generation Z politicians, born between 1997 and 2012, are set to enter the Jatiya Sangsad following their victories in the 13th parliamentary election.
While at least 23 Gen Z candidates contested, only five managed to secure seats. Four of them represent the National Citizen Party (NCP), a platform that emerged from the July 2024 mass uprising, while one hails from the Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish.
According to Election Commission (EC) records, 25 Gen Z aspirants initially submitted nomination papers, with two later withdrawing. The NCP fielded seven candidates, while Gono Odhikar Parishad and Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh nominated three each. The Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) put forward two candidates, while other parties - including AB Party, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Nationalist Front, and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish - nominated one each.
The successful Gen Z candidates are:
Md Nahid Islam, 27, NCP Convener and a leader of the 2024 uprising;
Akhtar Hossain, 28, NCP Member Secretary;
Hasnat Abdullah, 27, NCP Chief Organiser (Southern region);
Abdul Hannan Masud, 26, NCP Senior Joint Chief Coordinator; and
Said Uddin Ahmad Hanzala, 28, representing Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish.
Nahid Islam won Dhaka-11 by a margin of around 2,000 votes, polling 93,872 votes against his nearest rival's 91,833. Hasnat Abdullah drew attention with a decisive victory in Cumilla-4 (Debidwar), defeating Md A Jasim Uddin of Gono Odhikar Parishad, who received 49,644 votes.
In Rangpur-4 (Pirgachha-Kaunia), Akhtar Hossain secured 149,966 votes, outpacing Emdadul Haque Bharosa, who obtained 140,564. Abdul Hannan Masud triumphed in Noakhali-6 with 90,118 votes, defeating BNP candidate Mahbubur Rahman Shamim by 26,746 votes. Said Uddin Ahmad Hanzala claimed Madaripur-1 (Shibchar) in a narrow contest, winning 64,909 votes and edging past BNP nominee Nadira Akter by just 385 votes.
Masud, born on 1 January 2000, is now 26 years and one month old, making him the youngest MP in the 13th National Parliament.
Among the Gen Z candidates who were defeated, Sarjis Alam, NCP Chief Organiser (Northern region), attracted attention after losing Panchagarh-1 by approximately 8,000 votes to Barrister Naushad Zamir.
These new entrants mark a generational shift in Bangladeshi politics, signalling the rising influence of young leaders in shaping the country's parliamentary landscape.
