Twenty-three Bangladeshi nationals who were being held hostage in Libya, were rescued. According to the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, local authorities conducted a raid in the city of Misrata and freed the abducted Bangladeshis, according to our sister newsagency UNB. The operation was carried out by security forces following an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Libya into allegations of kidnapping and torture of foreign nationals for ransom under the Al-Ghairan police station area of Misrata.
During the operation, two suspects were arrested for their alleged involvement in the abduction. The rescued Bangladeshis and the detained suspects have been handed over to the Al-Ghairan Police Station for further legal proceedings. The Bangladesh Embassy in Libya expressed deep gratitude to the Libyan law enforcement agencies for their swift and effective action. The embassy is also in close contact with local authorities to ensure necessary legal and consular support for the released Bangladeshi nationals.
The United States recognised the 'Women Student Protest Leaders of Bangladesh' with the 'Madeleine Albright Honorary Group Award' as part of the 2025 International Women of Courage (IWOC) Awards. The honour acknowledges the exceptional bravery of a group of female student activists who played a critical role in leading protests against violent repression in Bangladesh during the July-August 2024 demonstrations.
A media note from the US Office of the Spokesperson states, "When male counterparts were arrested, these women found innovative ways to continue communication and lead the protests, defying censorship efforts, even during the complete shutdown of the internet. The bravery and selflessness of these women amid uncertainty was the very definition of courage." However Umama Fatema, one of the most recognisable women at the forefront of the movement, decided not to accept the recognition, in protest at what she considers the US State Department's complicity with Israel in the tragedy unfolding in Gaza.
The investigating agency of the International Crimes Tribunal has found "sufficient" evidence in a case filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on charges of crimes against humanity and mass killing. The charges in the case will be produced before the Tribunal at any moment, according to chief prosecutor Tajul Islam. "Sufficient evidence has been found against her. We shall prove it in the court, Insh'Allah. We shall prove her crimes irrefutably," he said, before adding he is yet to receive the final report.
As per the ICT Act, the investigating agency first submits the investigation report to the office of the chief prosecutor. Then the office of the chief prosecutor finalises the report after assessing and verifying it and submits it before the tribunal in the form of formal charges. Asked when the formal charges would be submitted to the tribunal, Tajul Islam said, "The process of submitting the charges formally is underway. The charges will be submitted at any moment."
The Army was deployed after a portion of the embankment in Anulia union of Ashashuni upazila, Satkhira, collapsed on the morning of March 31, causing approximately 150 feet of land to be washed away into the Khulpetua River. Although local residents attempted to construct a temporary ring embankment through voluntary efforts, the rising tidal pressure rendered their efforts unsuccessful, according to the ISPR, the Army's public relations wing.
Subsequently on April 1, the Deputy Commissioner of Satkhira, the Camp Commander of the Ashashuni Army Camp under the 55th Infantry Division, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, and representatives from the Water Development Board visited the affected area to assess the situation and initiate urgent measures. Currently, two patrol teams from the Ashashuni Army Camp are stationed in the area, providing full-scale assistance to local residents and the administration in repairing the embankment. Additionally, an engineering battalion team from the 55th Infantry Division has been deployed to aid in the restoration efforts.
