Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said that the police has now regained its reputation as a disciplined force since an elected, political government assumed office, and so it would be time for the Army to be gradually withdrawn to their barracks. "According to the government's policy decision, the army will not remain deployed indefinitely for maintaining law and order. A decision has been taken to gradually withdraw the army through coordination among the police, military and relevant agencies," he said.

A date of June 30 is in the works for a full, complete withdrawal.The Home Minister was talking to reporters after a meeting on the current situation and future measures regarding stone- and sand-mixed stone quarries in Sylhet division, in the conference room of the Home Ministry at the Bangladesh Secretariat. Referring to the stone quarries, the minister said the government has formed a high-level expert committee to facilitate limited leasing of stone quarries in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts while ensuring environmental protection and strict compliance with existing laws and regulations.

Investigators have identified 58 killings linked to the crackdown on Hefazat-e-Islam's Shapla Chattar rally in Dhaka and four districts on May 5-6, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal's (ICT) chief prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said this week. He confirmed the figure based on post-mortem reports, burial site identifications, and statements from victims' families. Hefazat-e-Islam published a preliminary list of 93 victims in 2025, while human rights group Odhikar reported 61 names in 2021.

Aminul said the number of accused would be "no fewer than 30," with six already arrested, including a former inspector general of police, though identities were not disclosed at this stage of investigation. "Sheikh Hasina will be the primary accused as the mastermind behind the plan. We have found evidence of her involvement," Aminul added. A late-night joint forces operation was carried out after which the gathering was dispersed amid gunfire, tear gas and sound grenades. Different organizations have provided varying estimates of the death toll.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved the procurement of three LNG cargoes from the spot market, apart from two proposals to purchase electricity from power plants, and a proposal to procure 163 vehicles. The meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, cleared the proposal to procure LNG, submitted by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division. The 20th cargo for June 8-9, the 21st cargo for June 9-10, and the 22nd cargo for June 14-15 will be purchased at a combined cost of Tk 2,186.35 crore.

According to sources, the LNG will cost $18 per MMBtu. The procurement will be carried out through the international quotation collection process under Rule 105(3)(a) of the Public Procurement Rules 2025. The approved suppliers are Vitol Asia Pte Ltd, Singapore, BP Singapore Pte Ltd, and Gunvor Singapore Pte Ltd.

Inflation climbed back above 9 percent in April, up from 8.7 percent in March, according to the latest data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). However, it was slightly lower than the 9.2 percent recorded in April last year. The data shows that inflation increased in both food and non-food categories during the month. Food inflation at the national level rose to 8.4 percent in April from 8.2 percent in March. Non-food inflation also climbed, reaching 9.6 percent compared to 9.1 percent a month earlier.

In April 2025, food inflation stood at 8.6 percent, while non-food inflation was 9.6 percent. BBS said the figures were calculated on a point-to-point basis using data from 154 markets across all 64 districts. In rural areas, overall inflation increased to 9.05 percent in April from 8.72 percent in March. Rural food inflation rose to 8.2 percent from 8.02 percent, while non-food inflation jumped to 9.8 percent from 9.4 percent.
