In his first official visit to Chattogram, newly appointed United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen visited the residence of former Mayor and former Member of Parliament Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury on Monday (26 January).
The meeting provided a platform for discussions on issues of mutual interest between Bangladesh and the United States, as Mr Chowdhury urged the Ambassador to encourage American investment in the country and highlighted the need for reducing export duties on the ready-made garments sector.
He also made a strong appeal for the United States to take an active role in addressing the ongoing Rohingya crisis and continue its support to Bangladesh. Emphasising the economic significance of Chattogram, Chowdhury underlined the city's crucial role in the national development and its strategic importance in economic planning.
The delegation accompanying Ambassador Christensen included Commercial Counsellor Paul Frost, Economic Section Chief Mike Pennell, Political Officer Firoz Ahmed and Economic Specialist Asif Ahmed.
The visit concluded with a dinner at Chowdhury's residence, where the discussions continued in a more informal setting, reflecting the warm ties between the two nations.
