Bangladesh's economy will grow faster than all South Asian countries except for Bhutan in the current fiscal year, according to the World Bank (WB). In its latest report titled "South Asia Economic Focus, Making (De) Centralisation Work", the WB also projects a 7.2% GDP growth for the country for the current FY 2019-20 and 7.3 % for the next fiscal.
"The outlook is clouded by rising vulnerability in the financial sector, but the economy is likely to maintain growth above seven per cent, supported by a robust macroeconomic framework, political stability, and strong public investment," the report said. The WB report also forecasts that Bangladesh's economy would grow at a faster pace than India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Maldives and Afghanistan.
The recent IED attacks targeting police at Gulistan and Science lab were carried out by a gang of New JMB in order to draw attention of Islamic State, according to police. It was revealed by two New JMB members, who were arrested by a team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) in Mohammadpur area of Dhaka, said Monirul Islam, CTTC chief during a press conference at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre.
Arrestees Md Mehedi Hasan Tamim and Md Abdullah Azmir are former students of Khulna University and Engineering University (Kuet) and also members of Neo JMB's military unit, said Monirul. Tamim was present at the scene during both the attacks whereas, Azmir was not physically present but he was one of the masterminds who was involved in making the IEDs used during the attacks.
The Cabinet endorsed the Radioactive Waste and Used Nuclear Energy Management National Policy with a provision that polluters would have to bear the costs for disposing of radioactive wastes. The approval came at the Cabinet meeting held with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at her office. Cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam briefed reporters at the Secretariat after the meeting.
"The policy has been prepared to dispose of all the radioactive wastes to be released from atomic energy materials in different sectors across the country," he said adding atomic energy was also used in ultrasonography test of the medical sector. About Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, the cabinet secretary said Russia would take away the wastes of the plant and dispose of that in their country as per the agreement.
More than 56 percent of the teachers at secondary level educational institutions do not prepare question papers for internal examinations on their own, a new report has revealed. According to the report published this week, these teachers buy question papers from teachers' associations, and the open market, or are dependent on their colleagues for preparing the papers. Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE), an NGO, unveiled the report titled "Education Watch 2018-19."
Among the teachers, 36.8 percent bought question papers from teachers' associations, 14.4 percent bought from the open market, and 10.3 percent prepared those taking help from other teachers, the report said. Only 43.7 percent of teachers claimed to have prepared the question papers themselves for different examinations. Currently, there are 358,907 teachers against 12,197,554 students in 29,330 secondary level educational institutions across Bangladesh, the report said.
