Artificial intelligence (AI) is a global fact of life that many would like to deny and so oppose it. This is not an unusual reaction and is triggered by fears of unemployment, loss of control over everyday life and a competition that may overwhelm human supremacy.
Part of it is true and the world looks increasingly hostile for those who are less skilled in tech matters. However, it's equally true that more avenues of work and income are opening up and will do so in future due to AI. The best way to face the future is to do a situation analysis and figure out where one fits in. This applies for Bangladesh as well.
Key Sectors for AI-Driven Employment and Growth
Several private sector tech companies who are already working with AI related work and had initially fired a large number of low tier workers and replaced them by AI are now exploring how AI can be used to actually support jobs. Profiting through lay off is a very short-term strategy.
They are also finding out that AI does make errors - maybe will improve later- which has increased the workload of the senior staff as they spend more than 40% extra time correcting AI errors. So, the thinking is to explore new ways of doing old things and not expect AI to provide the magic wand for profit making.
A recent report circulated in the BD tech world says the following broadly. Though they are not spectacular new revelations, the report is organised and matter of fact. A summary is given below.
The Readymade Garment (RMG) sector is a major foreign exchange earner which is based on low paid and low skilled workers particularly females. AI-driven production and maintenance and quality-control systems can help factories improve efficiency and stay competitive particularly against countries like Vietnam and others. But what about workers? The report says that retraining is the key, The level of training needed for workers to transit to supervisory, maintenance and tech type factory work is very possible and current workers can easily learn them.
• Fintech and Banking Services: Financial institutions and mobile financial services (MFS) like BKash and Nagad are already moving into AI-powered Bangla customer support services, compliance, fraud detection, and credit scoring. This means opportunities for data analysts, AI trainers, and digital financial service specialists.
IT, Digital Services, and the Gig Economy: While the earlier digital freelancing work - Upwork + - involved low end entry-level data entry and similar work, AI is creating new opportunities in digital marketing, graphic design, web development, custom software integration, and freelance platform work. The work is the same but the sophistication is more.
By using Bangla AI datasets, application layers, and software development Bangladeshis can upgrade from a pure digital labour work to digital product creation.
Commercial agriculture is a very lucrative sector using AI-supported weather reports, soil and crop analysis and supply-chain optimisation. This doesn't just help increase yields but also reduce waste. From digital start- ups the move is to agro-tech startups involving digital extension workers providing local level tech support roles.
• Healthcare and Telemedicine: India and Sri Lanka have already moved into AI-assisted diagnostic services and are profiting from it. Since this sector has less supply than demand, the potential for AI supported services is proven. It will create new skilled work opportunities for trained workers. It also has opportunities for employment abroad.
• Education and Skill Development: Integrating AI literacy, automated tutoring assistance, and vocational training platforms can help bridge the gap between youth demographics and modern market demands.
Reversing digital freelancing work loss
AI has grown very rapidly and that has hit Bangladesh freelance digital workers who were heavily into low end work that has largely been lost to AI.
Repetitive tasks like manual data entry, copy-editing, translation and non-original graphic template creation have basically disappeared from the digital job market. They can be done by clients using AI for almost free.
The answer to this job loss crisis for Bangladeshi youth is to shift and upgrade their roles by shifting from simple executioners to high-value content curators, strategic operators, and problem solvers. Some have already moved to these spaces and their income is significantly higher than before.
The report suggests the following moves
Shift from "Asset Creation" to "AI Cleanup and Quality Assurance"
Clients are generating large quantities of automated text, code, and images but these are often "boring" and some are mixed with AI hallucinations and lack "brand-specific context."
The act should be to move to "AI cleanup," remediation, and fact-checking which is seeing explosive growth. The income could leap from 20 dollars to 100 or five times.
An AI Orchestrator and Tool Expert
Instead of worrying about using code automation tools like Cursor or GitHub Copilot, developers and digital artists are now using them themselves thereby enhancing income by several folds.
Upwork and Fiverr data is showing very high demand for prompt engineers and those who can work with workflow automation. So, by learning to code free automation platforms like "n8n" or build customised AI lead generation advantage can be taken on in a growing sector.
• Hyper-Speed Production: Use AI tools to match multi-person agency output.
• Value Upselling: Optimise client conversion rates, retention, and sales pipelines.
• Role Transition: Become an "AI Content Strategist" or "Digital Solutions Architect."
• New Monetisation: Get hired for data annotation, model fine-tuning, Bangla datasets, and chatbot training.
Instead of anxiety, one needs to take advantage of the opportunities and retraining and rethinking AI is the key, not refusing to accept AI.
