Late prominent poet, writer, essayist and playwright Syed Shamsul Haque was remembered at a memorial meeting held on September 27 at National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Segunbagicha in the city. September 27 marked the second death anniversary of the multidimensional personality.

The event featured book launch, poetry recitation and stage play organised by the Department of Theatre and Film of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The two-day long event ended on September 28.

Haque's widow, distinguished novelist and short story writer Anwara Syed Haque and noted thespian Ramendu Majumdar spoke on life of Syed Shamsul Haque and his immense contributions to Bangladesh literature, cinema and play. Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy presided over the programme. The speakers opined that Haque's writings and articulations are unique, unparallel and give us a taste of the unusual and the remarkable. He got inspiration from the common people, their dreams, hopes and visions. He could explore their inner power, dreams and meanings of life.

Elocutionist Hasan Arif recited Syed Haque's poem "Amar Porichoy" to the delight of the audience. Besides, a collection of poems titled "Syed Haque: Kobitaye Anjali" that contains poems dedicated to the late Haque and penned by local and Indian poets was launched at the programme.

Later theatre troupe 'Theatre' staged Syed Shamsul Haque's play "Payer Awaj Pawa Jay" at the venue.

Syed Shamsul Haque is one of the most powerful, prolific and versatile poet and writers in the country. His is a major literary voice of present time. Since 1954, Syed Haque had published 39 volumes of poetry, 26 plays including 11 verse-plays, 6 major novels, 49 novellas, 8 collections of short stories, 7 volumes of essay and an autobiography. His poems reveal a deep inspiration, and appeal to the reader's own feelings and stimulate their imagination. His plays and novels about the Liberation War delve into the psychological state of the people and their inner conflicts in a war torn country.

His plays "Nuruldiner Shara Jibon", "Judhha Ebong Judhha", "Ekhane Ekhon" and novels "Neel Dangshon", "Smritimedh", "Ek Mutho Janmabhumi" and "Megh O Machine" among others have inspired generations.
