The International SeaKeepers Society Bangladesh Chapter, in collaboration with WildTeam, has launched a groundbreaking plastic waste management initiative at the WildTeam Conservation Biology Centre (TigerHouse) in the Sundarbans.
This pioneering programme, spearheaded by SeaKeepers, underscores their steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable waste management practices.
Held on January 10, the launch event was attended by distinguished guests, including the Dutch Ambassador to Bangladesh, Andre Carstens, and the EU Deputy Head of Delegation, Dr. Bernd Spanier, who joined local volunteers and community members in this impactful campaign.
Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Afia Sharmin, CEO of WildTeam Dr. Anwarul Islam, and Joymoni High School Headmaster Paritosh Mistry also attended the event, which drew a good number of students from local schools, along with volunteers from Village Tiger Response Teams (VTRTs), BaghBandhus, and Tiger Scouts.
The event began with an educational campaign, where Tiger Scouts received specialised training on cleanup procedures, waste management techniques, and the use of apps such as C4CEM and Debris Tracker for waste assessment.
Following the training, a pledge-writing competition inspired students to express their commitment to environmental protection, with prizes awarded for the most creative and impactful pledges.
Guided by the trained Tiger Scouts, participants undertook a large-scale cleanup operation at Joymoni Bazar and the surrounding school premises. Together, they removed a huge quantity of plastic waste, which was processed according to proper waste management protocols.
As part of the initiative, a few waste bins were installed across the school campus and market, with Tiger Scouts assigned to oversee their maintenance.
Regular monitoring and monthly assessments will ensure the sustainability of these efforts.
Ambassador Carstens and Dr. Spanier actively participated in the cleanup and praised the initiative's positive impact.
"SeaKeepers' leadership in tackling plastic pollution here is exemplary. This program is a powerful example of collective action and the potential of young changemakers," said Dr. Spanier.
Ambassador Carstens added, "The students' passion and energy are truly inspiring. They are setting an example not just for Bangladesh, but for the world."
Before the conclusion of the event, students showcased their pledges, performed songs, and engaged the audience with messages of conservation.
SeaKeepers Bangladesh Chapter President Enayetullah Khan extended his best wishes for the campaign's success, expressing hope that it would serve as a milestone in combating plastic pollution and inspiring greater environmental responsibility across communities.
The SeaKeepers team, in partnership with WildTeam, emphasised the importance of community involvement in ensuring the long-term success of such initiatives. Similar programmes were held as part of campaigns in Saint Martin's and Cox's Bazar, reinforcing SeaKeepers' holistic approach to education, community engagement and environmental action.
The SeaKeepers Bangladesh Chapter's role in organising and funding this programme highlights their leadership in marine conservation and environmental advocacy.
This initiative not only addresses the critical issue of plastic pollution but also nurtures a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders dedicated to protecting the Sundarbans.
