An 11-year-old girl died and at least three homes got damaged in separate landslides caused by heavy rains in Sadar and Jaintapur upazilas respectively of Sylhet district Saturday.
The deceased Archana Chhatri, daughter of Bulbul Chhatri, lived her life at a slum in 'Khadim Tea Garden' in the Sadar upazila and the damaged houses were in the Jaintapur upazila.
Ataur Rahman Shamim, member of Khadimnagar union parishad, said a chunk of mound collapsed on Bulbul's house located in the foothills in a remote area, leaving Archana dead on the spot.
The collapse occurred due to heavy rainfall for the past few days, Ataur said.
Sylhet Airport police station OC Moinuddin Shipon said they heard about the incident but could not go to the spot due to its remote location.
On the other hand, three homes were damaged as a hill collapsed in Chaknagol union of Jaintapur upazila early Saturday.
Fortunately, there were no casualties reported from the collapse, according to local UP member Md Abdul Wadud.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Al-Bashirul Islam visited the spot and provided the affected families with financial assistance of Tk 10,000 each.
He said they recommended to the higher authority for rehabilitation of the victims and other people living in the risky areas were asked to evacuate through local public representatives.
