Muhammad Khasru, a pioneering figure in the movement for decent films in the country has passed away. The filmmaker breathed his last at BIRDEM, Shahbagh on February 19. He was suffering from asthma, diabetes. He had been living in his residence at Keraniganj. Last month he was admitted to BIRDEM as his health conditions deteriorated. After receiving treatment at CCU he recovered and was even given release date from the hospital, but his afflictions returned suddenly and this time he succumbed to his disease.
Muhammad Khasru had been the editor of Dhrupadi and Chalachitra magazines. He is known to have spearheaded the movement for establishing film societies in the country. In the 70s he took an interview of Indian-Bengali director Ritwik Ghatak for Dhrupadi. It was later republished in various other publications in the Indian sub-continent. He has also been a photographer and a film director.
