Hadisur Rahman has finally returned home from Ukraine. But the unlucky sailor couldn't return to the motherland the way he would have loved.

He was the third engineer of the Bangladeshi bulk carrier Bangladesh Samriddhi that was stuck in war-ravaged Ukraine on their way to Italy from the Ukrainian port of Olvia. When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the ship failed to get out of Olvia.

After waiting for days stuck and uncertain about the future at the port of Olvia, the ship was hit by a Russian missile that killed Hadisur, who was on duty at the bridge of the vessel at the time..

On Monday afternoon, Hadisur's body, packed in a coffin, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

"I came a long way from home when my brother left the family for the last time. I thought I would come a long way to receive him when he got back home. I did, but not the way we wanted," Tarikul Islam, the brother of Hadisur, told the media on Monday.

The ship had a total of 29 crew members. When the attack took place in the first week of March, Hadisur was at the navigation bridge area of the vessel. He was hit directly by the Russian rocket, as the other crew members told the media.

The local Bangladesh residence in Ukraine with the help of the Ukraine Army rescued the living members of the ship, who eventually returned home last week via Romania.

Hadisur's body was also carried through the same route.

After the arrival in Dhaka, Hadisur's body is carried to Betagi, Broguna, his home town.

"It was so unfortunate that we have lost one of our engineers," Mujibur Rahman, the managing director of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, who owned the ship, said to the Dhaka Courier.

"According to the rules and regulation of service, Hadisur's family will be compensated. This is what we can only do for him and for his family," he added.

Anam Chowdhury, the chairman of the Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers' Association, said the family of Hadisur deserves a big amount of compensation from the authority.
