As part of Cosmos Foundation's Distinguished Speakers Series, Dan Shefet, President, Accountability and Internet Democracy (AAID), and an Expert Authority on European and IT Law, will be in Dhaka, Bangladesh to talk about 'Fake News and Hate Speech, Causes and Consequences -How it subverts our Democratic Systems'.
Mr. Anisul Huq, MP, Honb'le Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will be the Chief Guest at the event. The discussion will be chaired and conducted by Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Principal Research Fellow Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), National University of Singapore.
The event will be held at the Six Seasons Hotel, on April 6, 2019, at 10am.
Tipu Aziz, a Bangladeshi-born British professor and founder and head of Oxford Functional Neurosurgery, has been awarded Britain's highest neurosurgery honour. From Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS), he has been awarded the Medal of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) for his lifetime achievement in neurosurgery.
Prof Aziz was born in 1956 in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan). He studied Neurophysiology in University College London. He specialises in the study and treatment of multiple conditions including Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis, the release added.
Ailing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for better medical treatment. BSMMU director Brig Gen Dr AK Mahbubul Hoque and additional director Dr Md Nazmul Karim received Khaleda as black jeep carrying her reached the hospital at 12:35 pm from Old Dhaka Central Jail. Later, she was taken to the fifth floor of the hospital's cabin block in a wheelchair.
"Khaleda Zia was admitted to BSMMU's 621-no room (at Cabin Block) around 12:45 pm. We along with a five-member medical board visited her at the cabin around 2 pm," said BSMMU director Mahbubul Hoque. The BSMMU director said Khaleda has been suffering from serious pain in the joints of her hands and legs.
Businesses are on board with the government's plan to introduce four different rates of value-added tax (VAT) from July, clearing the way for the implementation of the much-talked about VAT law 2012. As per the scheme, there will be four different rates of VAT applied on most of the goods and services under the existing VAT law 1991: 5 percent, 7.5 percent, 10 percent and 15 percent.
"We have agreed in principle and will fix the remaining issues later," Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, told reporters after a meeting with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal. Representatives of the top trade bodies, revenue officials and Salman F Rahman, the prime minister's adviser on private industry and investment, were present among others at the meeting held on the premises of the planning ministry.
