Nation this week
The first real full week of excitement saw the government of ruling party AL appear to get slightly rattled, as Kamal Hossain's Oikyafront revealed it had a few more surprises up its sleeves.
Dr Reza Kibria, the first-born of slain AL legend and finance minister to the first govt. the party formed in the era. In what was probably a move worthy of a van. there's your standout signing of the season right there #Bangladesh, the 'Ronaldo to Juventus' equivalent of #Election2018. And doesn't Super Cat just know it too, love that smile on Kamal Hossain's face here!!! Expect the impact to grow as #Oikyafront put him out there in days ahead, let the country get to know its next Finance Minister, the brilliant son of a brilliant man.
The Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader said that the party's controversial lawmakers Amanur Rahman Khan Rana and Abdur Rahman Bodi have been ruled out of nomination list.
Rather, Rana's father Ataur Rahman for Tangail-3 (Ghatail) and Bodi's wife Shahina Akter Chowdhury for Cox's Bazar-4 (Ukhia-Teknaf) have been finalised for nomination to contest in the 11th general election. The Road Transport and Bridges Minister told this to the reporters after a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla at the Secretariat. The decision has been taken to avoid any controversy, he said. Quader said, "Though there are controversies about them and there are allegations against them, but the allegations are not proved. Even then, we disqualified them to avoid controversies."
Yet the party's effort to portray it as a shutout! Might boomerang! In fact surely will.
Skype was blocked as BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, a convicted fugitive in several cases, interviewed nomination aspirants for the upcoming elections from London using the telecomm app now owned by Microsoft. This was another show of nerves from the government, resulting in action that did nothing to mitigate the impact, and ended up a win for the opposition. Oikyafront 3 Mohajote 0.
Screenshot of a fake newspaper front page looking like Prothom Alo's 14 October issue went viral in the social media since Saturday afternoon. The screenshot shows the image of the page containing two major stories headlined "CJ leaves country facing government pressure" and "Threats to compel CJ to leave country".
It includes a commentary headlined "Government demonstrates its prowess" with the byline of Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman. In fact, there is no such news report or image published in the front page of Prothom Alo on Saturday. In an announcement, the newspaper authorities said that this was an act of ill motive.
