Following a lively debate in Parliament centring the July Charter Implementation Order, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said a special parliamentary committee will soon be formed to facilitate constitutional amendments. "A committee will be formed to amend the constitution. We intend to include representatives from all political parties on a proportional basis as well as independent lawmakers. We want to initiate this committee very soon, possibly by next Sunday (Apr. 5), taking everyone's opinions into account," he said.
The Chief Whip said while the exact number is yet to be finalised the committee is expected to consist of 15, 18, or 20 members. "This is a unique situation. We want to include legal experts from both the treasury and opposition benches. If a party lacks legal experts, we will still include their representatives. Our goal is to bring the constitution to a stage where frequent changes are no longer necessary," he added. The Chief Whip emphasised that constitutional reform is a necessity under the July Charter, referring to the principles established following the 2024 uprising.
A Bangladeshi national was killed after shrapnel from a drone interception fell on a farm in the Al Rifaa area of the United Arab Emirates, according to the Emirates News Agency-WAM news. Authorities were reportedly responding to the incident. Earlier two Bangladeshi nationals were killed and seven others sustained injuries due to missile and drone attacks in different parts of West Asia amid the US-Israel war on Iran.
Meanwhile Iranian Ambassador to Bangladesh Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi on Wednesday said Iran's Security Council has granted permission for six stranded Bangladeshi ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Bangladesh and Iran are working together to ensure the safe return of the vessels, he told reporters at the Iranian Embassy. He also mentioned that Bangladesh's Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, wrote to his Iranian counterpart on Tuesday, expressing gratitude for Iran's assistance in safely repatriating Bangladeshis from Iran.
Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Md Aminul Islam, has said that all cases filed across the country following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August, 2024, during the mass uprising will be reviewed. "The cases being filed across Bangladesh, which in fact fall under the jurisdiction of this tribunal-each case may have 400 to 500 accused," he said. "We do not believe that all accused are guilty. We believe that while there are guilty individuals among them, there are also many innocent people... Often, the real culprits are being let go, while many innocent people are being jailed."
Aminul Islam said that he has instructed the tribunal's investigation agency to provide information on all cases filed across the country following the anti-discrimination movement. He has already received copies of 500-700 cases. A team will receive copies of all such cases from across the country within a few days and review those.
Bangladesh could lose more than $17.5 billion in exports following its graduation from the least developed country (LDC) category, the steepest projected loss among all graduating nations globally, according to a new United Nations report. The figure represents nearly a third of the country's $54.8 billion in total exports recorded in 2023, according to the Trade Preferences Outlook 2025, published by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
"The trade effects of losing LDC preferences could be substantial in certain cases," it said, projecting that Bangladesh can face a 32.24 percent decline in its total exports after it transitions to a developing country. The warning comes just over six months before Bangladesh's scheduled graduation on November 24, 2026. The new BNP-led government, which took office in February, has said it will seek a three-year deferral, pushing the graduation date to November 2029, citing disruptions in preparedness caused by prolonged global crises and domestic economic pressures.
