On Saturday 16th September Bangladesh Heritage Foundation organized the launching of the book "Pakistan on the Brink: A Civilizational Quest". This book is a unique book first of its kind written in South Asia. Participants from various professions took part.
Ambassador Waliur Rahman has explored dark side of Pakistan in his new book portraying crisis amid militarization of a state over last seven decades.
Speakers lauded the courageous role of the writer while addressing a publication programme of the book titled 'Pakistan on the Brink' at a city hotel on Saturday.
Former secretary of Foreign Ministry Waliur Rahman is a career diplomat. He served as special envoy of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was also close to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Former National University vice-chancellor Prof Harun-or-Rashid in his welcome speech made a review on the book.
On behalf of Bangladesh Heritage Foundation, Ambassador Waliur Rahman honored three scholars in the publication ceremony. They are- freedom fighters Mofidul Hoque, Dr MA Hasan and Shahriar Kabir.
Among the guests, former state minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abul Hasan Chowdhury, Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik, BIISS chairman former ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Bangladesh Heritage Foundation co-chairperson Shahrukh Rahman, vice-chairman Prof. Farhad Hossain, Professor Shabnam Azim and Sampriti Bangladesh convener Piyush Bandyopadhyay participated in the discussion.
Waliur Rahman was the chief coordinator of the committee formed to try the killers of the Father of the Nation. He is cooperating as an advisor to the International Crimes Tribunal. He resigned from the Pakistan Embassy in Switzerland in 1971 in protest against Pakistan Army action in East Pakistan. His diplomatic service included key roles in places like Geneva, New York, Jakarta, Rome, Jeddah, and Tunisia.
He has authored several books including Forgotten War Forgotten Genocide; A Brief History of the Framing of the International Crimes Tribunal Act, 1973; Transition to Democracy; UN We Believe and Other Essays.
