Noted cultural organisation Wrishiz Shilpi Gosthi recently celebrated its 42nd founding anniversary through a colourful programme at Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Segunbagicha in the city.
Prime minister's International Affairs Adviser was present as the chief guest at the event and handed over Wrishiz Padak to seven eminent artistes from different cultural fields. Dhaka University pro vice-chancellor Dr Muhammad Samad and general secretary of National Press Club Farida Yasmin were present as guests at the event. The programme was presided over by Wrishiz president Fakir Alamgir.
The programme featured presenting Wrishiz Padak, discussion and a cultural show. This year, the festival has been dedicated to recently deceased journalist Golam Sarwar and singer Ayub Bacchu.
Ustad Matiul Haque Khan (classical), Ataur Rahman (theatre), Professor Nisar Hossain (fine arts), Jayanto Chattopadhyay (recitation and acting), Tapan Mahmud (Tagore songs), Khairul Anam Shakil (Nazrul songs) and Baul Shafi Mandol (folk songs) received Wrishiz Padak for their contributions to the respective fields.
Fakir Alamgir is a founder of Wrishiz Shilpi Gosthi and folk singer. After the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, he emerged as a Gono Sangeet (inspiration songs for the masses) singer. Some of his notable songs are "O Sokhina", "Shantahar", "Nelson Mandela", "Naam Tar Chhilo John Henry" and "Banglar Comrade Bondhu". He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1999 by the Government of Bangladesh.
Alamgir started his music career in 1966. He played his role as a singer in 1969 uprising in East Pakistan. Alamgir has worked with Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the Liberation War.
