Kamal Lohani, a legendary journalist, revolutionary activist and an epic figure of cultural activism was born on June 26, 1934. He grew up witnessing the Indian independence movement, the partition and the language movement. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2015 by the Government of Bangladesh.
On the occasion of his 85th birthday, different cultural and political organisations greeted cultural activist and the defunct Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra's head of news Kamal Lohani.
Under the titled "Pochashite Kamal Lohani", the event was organised by Lohani's family members, peers and followers. The event featured discussion, photography exhibition, documentary screening and cultural show, which was held at National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on June 26.
Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam was the convenor of the birthday celebrations programme. Cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor, Workers Party of Bangladesh president and also social welfare minister Rashed Khan Menon, Communist Party of Bangladesh president Mujahidul Islam Selim, National Professor Dr Anisuzzaman , Professor Salimullah Khan, thespians Mamunur Rashid and Nasiruddin Yousuff, Sammilito Sangkskritik Jote president Ghulam Quddus, Ganasangeet Samannay Parishad president Fakir Alamgir, among others discussed on Kamal Lohani's life, works and immense contributions to socio-cultural and political journey life.
The discussants opined Lohani is humble, workaholic, thinker and a conscious person by nature. He is a studious and always involved himself with the light of knowledge. He was always a rebellious child and against all kinds of misdeeds.
On the occasion of his birthday, Workers Party of Bangladesh, CPB, Bangladesh National Museum, Swadhin Bangla Betar Shilpi Parishad, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi, Satyen Sen Shilpigoshthi, Kranti Shilpigoshthi, Udichi Shilpigoshti, Ganasangeet Samannay Parishad and others paid tribute to Kalam Lohani.
A documentary on Lohani titled 'Pita Path', directed Yakub Ali Mithu and narrated by Kamal Lohani's son Sagar Lohani, was screened at the National Theatre Hall.
