Different cultural organisations observed the National Mourning Day, marking the 45th death anniversary of country's founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, organising various programmes on August 15.
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Liberation War Museum, Bangladesh Sangeet Sangathan Samannay Parishad, Bangladesh Abritti Samannoy Parishad, Abrittikar, Shongbrita and others streamed programmes on their Facebook pages. Besides, Bangladesh Film Development Corporation-based artistes' organisations arranged a programme on BFDC premises.
The killing of the independence hero on that dark night also opened a dark chapter in Bangladesh's history with around one and a half decades of military dictatorship marked by bloody coups and counter-coups. The killers, a group of rogue army soldiers, did not spare even a 10-year-old boy or a pregnant woman during the carnage.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid her homage by placing a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi Road No. 32 on Saturday morning. Hasina, also the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu, then stood in solemn silence in front of the portrait for some time. She was accompanied by her daughter Saima Wazed Hossain.
A contingent of the Bangladesh Armed Forces gave the state salute at that time, while the bugle played a tune of grief. A special prayer was offered along with the recitation of the Quran seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of the Aug 15 carnage victims.

A total of 19 artistes' organisations observed the National Mourning Day arranging a programme on BFDC premises where information minister Hasan Mahmud, Dhallywood actors Shakib Khan, Misha Sawdagar, Zayed Khan, Reaz, Omar Sunny, Ananta Jalil and others were present.
Bangladesh Sangeet Sangathan Samannay Parishad streamed a two-day event titled 'Shahadat Barshikite Shraddhanjali' on Friday and Saturday on its Facebook page.
Singers Abu Bakar Siddiq and Anima Mukti Gomes paid tribute to Sheikh Mujib rendering songs and journalist Abed Khan spoke on life and works of Mujib at the programme, anchored by the general secretary of the organisation Biswajit Roy.
Bangladesh Abritti Samannoy Parishad has organised a month-long online event. The organisation will stream recitation shows on its Facebook page every Friday and Saturday until August 31.

Recitation troupes from Dhaka, Khulna, Rajshahi, Chattogram, Mymensingh, Barishal, Faridpur, Sylhet and Cumilla participated in the programmes.
Recitation troupe Abrittikar streamed a live programme on its Facebook page titled 'Ushar Duare Rakter Daag' in the morning.
Recitation troupe Shongbrita also streamed a live programme in the morning. The programme titled 'Janak Tumi' featured poems penned by leading poets.
Besides, cultural organisations Srote Abritti Sangsad, Chattogram Abritti Charcha Kendra, Bodhon Abritti Parishad Chattogram and others paid tribute to Mujib through online programmes.
