The Government of India has named Chhayanaut as the recipient of Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony for the year 2015. A prize money worth one crore rupee will be provided with a souvenir for heritage and a crest as part of the award. A jury board led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has selected Chhayanaut. The award was introduced in 2011 by the Indian Government marking the third half-centenary of Rabindranath Tagore's birth. It looks to award attempts to attain unity, universality and fraternity trough culture. According to Indian Express the jury board also included India's Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, former chief election commissioner N Gopalaswami and national vice president of India's political party- BJP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe. Two more awardees were also announced in the same declaration for the years 2014 and 2016. They are Monipuri dance master Rajkumar Singhajit Singh and sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar.
The award has been conferred for Chhayanaut's contribution in practicing and propagating Bangla culture, music, literature particularly Tagore renditions throughout the world. Indian High Commission in Dhaka revealed this news in a statement released on October 25. The statement further reads that Chhayanaut has facilitated cultural cooperation with West Bengal and also India. It also played a role in the struggle for achieving Bangladesh's sovereignty by shaping the cultural identity of the country. According to the statement, the institution further contributed to uphold the universal liberal approach to humanity of Rabindranath Tagore. Chhayanaut has been awarded for the year 2015. Previously the award was given to Pundit Ravi Shankar in 2012 and to Zubin Mehta in 2013.
