The coming August 15 marks the forty-third death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. To observe this day in advance a daylong art camp was organised at the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital. Noted artist Professor Samarjit Roy Chowdhury inaugurated the art camp in the pleasant morning of August 9. Also present during the auspicious opening were artists Hashem Khan, Anowar Hossain, Professor Jamal Ahmed, Rokeya Sultana. Ashraful Alam Paplu, director of the Department of Fine Arts at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy moderated the inaugural session. About fifty artists from both older and younger generations have taken part in the art camp. All these will be put up for public display at National Art Gallery of the academy on August 12.
Samarjit Roy Chowdhury in his speech said, "Whenever a new painting is made on Bangabandhu, a new view of his rebellious nature is found." He further added saying, "The month of August, whenever it comes around, it starts making us feel sad, because this is the very month in which Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was murdered along with his family in 1975."
Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy while presiding over the inaugural session said that the artworks that have been produced will be preserved in the archive of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Among the participating artists of the art camp were Samarjit Roy Chowdhury, Anowar Hossain, Abdul Mannan, Ranjit Das, Rokeya Sultana, Siddharth Talukder, Sushant Adhikari, Rafi Haque, Ashraful Alam Paplu, Dewan Mizan, Alaptagin Tushar, Anisuzzaman, Dulal Chandra Gain, Kanak Chapa Chakma, Anukul Chandra Majumdar and more. n
