Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir was toppled by the country's army after 30 years in power, with a military council installed in his place to run the country on an interim basis pledging elections in two-years time. The general who led the move to remove him though, himself lasted only 24 hours as the head of the military council before being forced to yield to a fellow general considered to be less of a Bashir loyalist.

Even so, protesters remain camped outside army HQ in the capital, Khartoum, demanding a civilian administration. A spokesman said leaders of the past regime should be put on trial. The Sudanese Professionals' Association, which has spearheaded the protests, urged supporters to foil any attempt to disperse the sit-in. "We hope that everyone will head immediately to the areas of the sit-in to protect your revolution and your accomplishments," it said in a statement.

The number of measles cases reported worldwide in the first three months of 2019 tripled compared with the same time last year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The UN body said provisional data indicated a "a clear trend", with all regions of the world seeing outbreaks. Africa had witnessed the most dramatic rise - up 700%.

The WHO warned actual numbers may be far greater, since only one in 10 cases globally are reported. Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can sometimes lead to serious health complications, including infections of the lungs and brain. Ukraine, Madagascar and India have been worst affected by the disease, with tens of thousands of reported cases per million people.

Since September, at least 800 people have died from measles in Madagascar alone. Outbreaks have also hit Brazil, Pakistan and Yemen, "causing many deaths - mostly among young children".

Troubled Indian airline Jet Airways has failed to secure emergency funding from its lenders. The company, which last week suspended all international flights, also extended the cancellation period. Jet was India's second-largest airline by market share, until recently. But dozens of its planes have been seized by creditors, leaving the firm with only seven operational aircraft.

Thousands of passengers have been stranded due to the firm's lack of funds. Jet now has debts of more than $1.2bn (£900m). In a letter to staff, chief executive Vinay Dube said that interim funding had "not been forthcoming thus far". That means founding chairman Naresh Goyal's resignation last month has failed to pave the way for potential investors to save India's oldest private carrier. Pilots, engineers, and ground staff, who have not been paid since December, say they will strike if the banks do not inject emergency funds.

The 850-year-old dome of the famous cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris was burnt down, as a fire that officials say could be linked to renovation work, spread rapidly across the building. Last year, the Catholic Church in France appealed for funds to save the building, which was crumbling.

The cause was not immediately clear though. Hundreds of people gathered in the streets around the cathedral, observing the flames in silence. On his way to the scene after cancelling a planned speech from Elysee Palace, French President Emmanuel Macron said his thoughts were with "all Catholics and all French people." The Notre-Dame cathedral, which is visited by millions of people every year, is undergoing renovations after cracks began to appear in the stone, sparking fears the structure could become unstable.
